Course Description: 

Integrating historically segregated approaches to treating SUD’s and psychiatric disorders is crucial to improve treatment outcomes. This workshop will provide skills and interventions to effectively diagnose and treat co-occurring disorders, including DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, a comprehensive review of substance use disorders, a neuroscience model of SUD’s, and shifting paradigms to reduce stigma.

By the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to identify and practice:

  • Understand basic criteria for SUD diagnoses, completing training with comfort in diagnosing SUD
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of psychiatric disorders commonly co-occurring with SUD and the concept of self-medication
  • Gain skills and interventions to effectively treat SUD and psychiatric disorders simultaneously

About the Trainer: 

Melanie Davis, LCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 15 years of experience in behavioral health, clinical supervision, and workforce development. She currently serves as Lead Clinical Workforce Development Facilitator at Community Solutions, where she designs and delivers evidence-based training, mentor’s clinicians, and supports organizational learning initiatives. Her clinical expertise serving children, adults, couples, and families includes TF-CBT, EMDR, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, Seeking Safety, and Family Systems therapy, and she is a Certified Instructor in Crisis Prevention Institute’s Nonviolence Crisis Intervention model. A BBS-approved clinical supervisor, Melanie, has extensive experience providing reflective supervision, Medi-Cal/CalAIMs compliance training, and continuing education for mental health professionals. She is passionate about advancing equitable access to care, reducing stigma, and strengthening the behavioral health workforce.

CE’s: This course is approved for 3 hours of continuing education units for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and/or LEPs as required by the California B.B.S. under CEPA Provider #129412, and for RADT, CADC, and LAADC by CCAPP-EI CADAAC Provider # 7213401223.
