“I was scared something bad was going to happen to me and my grandma,” says Maya. “I was too scared to say anything because I didn’t know if I would be safe.” 10-year-old Maya had been sexually assaulted by the man who rented a studio behind her grandparents’ home where she lived.
Thanks to you, Maya doesn’t have to be afraid anymore. She finally feels safe again, even as she prepares to face her abuser in court. Your support provided a Sexual Assault Advocate, first to accompany Maya and her grandparents to the police department to report the assault and then to be by her side every step of the way as they prepared for trial.
You also provided Maya with peer counseling, therapy and legal advocacy. On a pre-trial court tour Maya even got to meet Percy, a support dog, who has helped ease her fears about court a bit.
Maya still worries about seeing the perpetrator in court but feels much braver today. She has learned that she is safe and that nobody is going to hurt her anymore.
“It’s nice having people that listen and care about me,” says Maya. “[I’ve learned] it’s okay to tell someone when something bad happens and that not everyone is a mean person.”
While they were going through this, COVID happened and the family was struggling financially. Maya’s grandmother is grateful for the emotional and financial support they received. “If it wasn’t for Community Solutions, I’m really not sure where we would be today.”
